Michael Jarvis, Still The Man To Be On

Alainmaar looked capable of negotiating the step up to Pattern-race grade when collecting a handicap over a mile and a quarter at Epsom on 21 April. The Michael Jarvis-trained horse racing tip won by two and a half lengths from Hanoverian Baron – overcoming an official rating of 102 – and, given the ease of his victory, should now be ready to tackle Listed company. Being by the US stallion Johar, and out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, Alainmaar is not likely to stay much farther. He is still improving, however.

Fallen Idol also seems to be making significant progress, judged on his smooth two-and-a-half-length defeat of Karaka Jack in the one-mile Esher Cup at Sandown on 23 April. His success was registered from an official mark of 89, so he has more to do than Alainmaar to succeed in Group events, but the style with which shrugged off the opposition was undeniably impressive. A St James’s Palace Stakes entry shows how highly this son of Pivotal is rated and he too should be able to collect a Listed prize.

Redwood could manage no better than second place on his visit to Sandown, for the Gordon Richards Stakes on 24 April, but, by running the highly-regarded Glass Harmonium to just a head, he did more than enough to indicate he is at home in Group Three contests. Redwood became slightly outpaced in mid-race, losing a fair amount of ground in the process, but he stayed on well in the final furlong and seems sure to improve for the outing. By High Chaparral, he may eventually handle a mile and a half.
