BUCKAROOS BIOS AND MORE

Patience Moore
(aka The Cowboy Girl)
Singer, songwriter and sometimes yodeler, Patience Moore is an artist who embraces country music’s classic past while keeping one cowgirl-booted foot in the present. That combination shines brightest in her most recent release, Buckaroos Sleep Too!, a 2-CD collection of music for families, country in nature (from western swing and boogies to acoustic ballads and lullabies) with G-rated lyrics, A-list Nashville musicians, and fresh arrangements, all highlighting Patience’s singing and songwriting. Patience ( aka The Cowboy Girl) sang all the songs and performed all the sound effects for BUCKAROOS SLEEP TOO! By refusing to use mechanical sound effects, kids will learn that they can use their voices for funny sounds and improvisations as well.

Patience was chosen to be the featured yodeler at the annual Patsy Montana Birthday Celebration at the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and played festivals with Johnny Cash and Rider’s in the Sky. After hearing Patience sing the Patsy Montana classic, “I Want to be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” Montana’s grandson, Michael, confessed that Patience’s rendition reminded him so much of his grandma; he thought she sang it the best of anyone he had ever heard. (And he’s heard ‘em all!)

After earning a music degree from Yale University (where she roomed with Jodie Foster), Patience moved to New York City. Her band, Patience and the Cowboy Angels, became a top draw at local clubs, which inspired her move to Nashville in 1998. Once in Nashville, she and producer/multi-instrumentalist Van Manakas teamed up to create her self-titled album, released on Rab Records.

(Patience and the Cowboy Angels still has great fun and success playing live at private parties and other events. Click here to contact the band to play at your event.)Patience, the CD, has a stylistic range from western swing and traditional country to a more contemporary sound. They’re all served up by Patience’s velvety voice and emotional delivery. Click here to check it out www.rabrecords.com. Selected songs have received airplay on Power Country 102.9 FM, Nashville, and her song “ My Own Boyfriend” is included on the soundtrack to “Keeping Sound,” an independent documentary film for which Patience also wrote several other tunes.

The timing of releasing Buckaroos Sleep Too! could not have been any better. Married in 2000, Patience and husband, Van Manakas, welcomed their son Theo into the world in 2001. Their newest baby boy, August, was born in October 2003. Now the entire family enjoys the music inspired by Patience’s love of cowboy life, which began with childhood-summers spent under Rocky Mountain skies.

Van Manakas played all guitars and mandolins and co-produced/wrote/arranged Buckaroos Sleep Too!. This guy is all over the record and that’s a good thing! Van brings his brilliance in jazz to the swing tunes here with delicious improvised solos and strong melodic ensemble parts. His love for country music and his ability to play all styles is perfect for this eclectic set of country and swing music. Van’s amazing virtuoso guitar work is featured on his solo Rab Records CD American Guitar. “Virtuosity speaks for itself. But I'm going to ramble on about other aspects of this fine, fun record along with the absolutely mind-bending guitar playing of this soft- spoken Telecaster wizard...”-puremusic.com

Ranger Doug - How lucky are we that two-time Grammy winner Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky joined us to sing two duets with the Cowboy Girl? Stuart Duncan graced our tracks with his amazing fiddling. One of our favorite games was to listen to just the fiddle track while we were mixing the music to just hear all the different sounds that Stuart could make with that fiddle under his chin! Pick up almost any country CD in the past ten years and Stuart is on it. He was touring all summer with Grammy winner and bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley. You can also hear Stuart’s own CD on Rounder Records at www.rounder.com

Rick Lonow won a Grammy for his drumming on the late June Carter record Press On. He was welcomed back to join her on the latest Wildwood Flower, just released. He is known around town for his cool tasteful playing. Rick drums with The Jamie Hartford Band, one of our favorites and has a gold record hanging somewhere for penning the hit Poco tune “Call it Love”. www.jamiehartfordband.com

Dennis Crouch joined Stuart this summer on the Down from the Mountain tour with Ralph Stanley, playing his upright bass and joined Rick on June Carter’s Wildwood Flower. An Arkansas native, Dennis chews tobacco while putting down the most solid tracks you ever heard.

If you’re in Nashville anytime soon, check out vocalist/guitarist John England and the Western Swingers at Roberts on lower Broadway. And he also has a really fun western swing CD out. Visit

We knew that Tommy Hannum was the steel guitar player for our record when he already knew the old swing tune “Hamburger Hop”. You have to be pretty into that great style to know that song! When we heard his own record and all the wonderful kooky sounds that he can pull out of his steel guitar, we knew we were a good match! Find out more at www.Tommyhannum.com

We also lucked out to have Cynthia Wyatt on harp and Julie Adams on cello. These ladies will make you swoon as you relax to the quiet-time music. Special thanks to all the background vocalists who brought a really great sound to Buckaroos Sleep Too!

What about all those cute cartoon animals dancing all around this site and the colorful CD cover? The Cowboy Girl got together with Joe Johnston  www.Johnstonarts.com and after playing him the music and talking to him about all the buckaroo characters, presto! He created the perfect art, translating the fun tunes into fun pictures!

And who put it all together? That would be Mark Montgomery, Amanda Obringer, David Dewese and the gang over at echomusic. Thanks to Echo for always doing a great job, and being in the forefront of Independently-produced music. ABOUT THE SONGS
By The Cowboy Girl

PLAYTIME CD

Honky Tonk Kitty
For 17 years, I had two cats – brothers; Elvis and WIllie. This is my ode to them, led by Elvis. They had such playful personalities. I imagined this might be what they’d do if they only had the chance.

Everybody Eats When They Come to My House
A fresh western swing rendition of a Cab Calloway’s Big Band favorite, rhyming names and foods and celebrating being together.

Gudgie Wudger Boogie Woogie
We have a beautiful 3 year-old Red Bone Coon Hound named Cyndi-Lou. She is so sweet and has such a cute wrinkly face that we sometimes call her our “Gudgie Wudger”, a phrase that was inspired by our watching the bloodhound and his owner in the movie “Best In Show”. When Cyndi-Lou gets excited about something like dinnertime, she lifts her paws way up high in kind of a marching step, and shakes her head back and forth. It’s really dear and inspired this unusual boogie.

Hamburger Hop
This little swing tune puts the harmony in hamburgers, plain and simple. It’s about the time when roadside hamburger stands were just coming into vogue. How many fun songs to sing are there about pickles with a barber shop quartet no less?!

You and My Ole Guitar
This sweet friendship song harkens back to the days of singing cowboys and features yodeling from The Cowboy Girl.

I’m Just Shy
I wrote this song from the point of view of a person that is shy. It was written after talking to a close “shy” friend about shyness, and we realized that shyness needn’t be judged as something that is wrong with someone; just think of a deer or a rabbit. They are shy and we don’t expect them to be otherwise! This song explains about being shy without apologies...and it swings too!

New Broom Boogie
Taken from the same era as Hamburger Hop, New Broom Boogie is a Cinderella-type scenario that lets you sweep away your troubles to the beat of the band.

Chicken Scratch
This traditional fiddle tune is kooky and fun as all get out. When Van plays it for me, I always end up making up a strange chicken dance! I can’t resist, so I had to include it to see what kind of dances you would come up with.

Ways of the West
I have spent a lot of time on ranches out west. Dude ranches, working cowboy ranches - and some of them seem to have their own language! Certainly there is a unique subculture of working cowboys. This song imagines a real cowboy explaining to a “weekend cowboy”, just in from the city to experience the west, what cowboy life really is about. I tried to use as many cowboy lingo phrases as possible! It’s “Roy Rogers meets LL Cool J” in this rapping, yodeling display of cowboy lingo. Try to keep up!

Buckaroos Sleep Too!
Describing the emerging nighttime in the world of western ranches, we sing here of how cowboys go to sleep just like everyone else. The first of two duets with rich baritone Ranger Doug of the two time Grammy Award winning group Rider’s in the Sky, this western swing tune closes the playtime CD and opens the door to the quiettime CD. If cowboys and cowgirls go to sleep with no problem then maybe . . .

QUIETTIME CD

Where Do You Sleep?
Very popular with the little ones, this sweet sing-a-long song is about where different animals sleep in their natural setting.

Molly’s Song
This story song chronicles a lonely but strong and creative Molly and her single-parent rancher father as they find their way to understanding each other living out on the prairie. She has to “break” a rule to help her father and in doing so shows him where he had been shortsighted. This story shows how relationships can go over different bumps and how we can get over them and grow together.

That’s How a Cowboy Says His Goodnights
Ranch life is full of routine and ritual. Over a gentle lilting waltz, a cowboy brings us along as he prepares his ranch, his horses and himself for sleep. This second duet features smooth-as-silk yodeling from two time Grammy award-winning Ranger Doug (Riders in the Sky).

Wrapped in a Rainbow
I had a period in my childhood where I had trouble falling asleep after my mother died. Sometimes I would turn on the radio and find soothing music and try to imagine a ballet, which would help me relax and fall asleep. As a harp and guitar swirl around, Wrapped in a Rainbow soothes and supports sleepers and reminds them of the endless possibilities of the mind and imagination, and that we can change where our mind is taking us.

Ceedo’s Song
A beautiful instrumental lullaby that will go straight to your heart.

Are You Ever Gonna Fall Asleep?
A fun tiny interlude for those still awake!

When I Was a Horse
This unusual song offers a story from the point of view of a loving spirit remembering his days as a horse, reaching back to those who cared for him. It relates the power of gentleness and kindness to animals.

Time Flies
Inspired by the budding of the first crocus in spring, this instrumental opens your heart and soothes your spirit.

Midnight on the Meadow
I worked on a horse-packing ranch in Wyoming where we would take guests by horseback into the backwoods to camp and fish in beautiful spots not easily accessible. Drawn from one of my overnight horseback adventures in the meadows of the Wind River Range, when the horses were sleeping out in the field, and a rainbow was fading overhead, this lush lullaby floats through all the mysteries of a Western meadow at night.
